Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older.  For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

CEO - 2009 Special Olympics Winter World Games - Boise, Idaho

Special Olympics, Inc. (SOI), based in Washington, DC, is an international organization dedicated to empowering individuals with intellectual disabilities to become physically fit, productive and respected members of society through sports training and competition.  Special Olympics offers children and adults with intellectual disabilities year-round training and competition at no cost in 30 Olympic-style summer and winter sports. Special Olympics seeks a President and CEO of the 2009 World Winter Games Operating Committee (GOC).

The mission of the 2009 World Winter Games Operating Committee (GOC) is to raise funds, plan and execute the events for the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games being held February, 2009 in Boise, Idaho. There will be up to 3000 athletes representing 85 countries that will be participating in the games.  The GOC is charged with raising $28M and building a staff of professionals to handle the marketing, fundraising, planning and execution of the games. Over 6000 volunteers will be required for these games and they will come from the local Idaho communities.  Reporting to the Co-Chairs, Jim and Pirie Grossman, and the Board of Directors, the President/CEO  will be responsible for working with the Board to develop and execute the plans for raising the necessary funding, the detailed plans for the games and provide the day-to-day leadership and direction for GOC and its programs, policy and advocacy efforts.
