| Jefferson Alves, Special Olympics Brazil |
“It was an unforgettable experience. Incredible! I was so thrilled that I could do this everyday.” These were Jefferson Alves' words when asked how he felt at having carried the Special Olympics flag at the 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games Opening Ceremonies.
A Special Olympics Brasil athlete since 2001, Alves competed in aquatics at the World Games, winning a bronze medal for the 50m backstroke and placing 4th in the 50m relay. Alves adored the World Games experience and says he learned many new things. It took him a few days, though, to get accustomed to the Irish food — “Too spicy for my taste!” he said.
Jefferson thanks Special Olympics for taking him off the street and giving him an interest in life. His message to all the athletes around the globe is “Go for it! You can make your own destiny. Never give up what you love …. Never give up your dream!"
