Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older. For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Jelena Carroll writes of her experience at the 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games:

"I'm from Sulphur, Louisiana. I was the only female gymnast from my State. I had a great time in Dublin — it was so beautiful. I received one gold and four silver medals. My hometown was very proud of me.

“I'm the only child born to Randy and Lydia Carroll. My Daddy's my hero and my mama's my special mentor because she's been there for me right beside every step of the way. She has taught me to believe in myself and if I wished for it along with praying for it my Dream would come true.”

In addition to volunteering at the school she used to attend, Carroll assists her mother with her Mary Kay business.

“I hope to get to go back to World Games someday,” Carroll said.
