Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older. For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Michael Conder, Special Olympics New Zealand

Special Olympics New Zealand's Michael Conder was born 23 August 1964. He is married and lives independently with his wife Janine in Tauranga, New Zealand.

Conder is an avid competitor in golf; his best score to date is 90 for 18 holes on his Par 67, 9-hole home course Otumetai. He hopes to — and is well on the way — to improving that personal best.

He cites competing at the 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games and the National Games in Auckland 2001 as his career highlights. His ambition was to have a handicap of 25–30 prior to the World Games and he hoped to win a medal in the 18-hole stroke play in Ireland. He achieved his goal by winning bronze in his division. His medal-winning performance is all the more remarkable when it's known that just nine days before the start of the World Games, Conder dislocated his shoulder in a swimming pool.

At the New Zealand National Games he partnered Charlie Dempsey, New Zealand’s representative on the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA).

In the long term Conder hopes to have a handicap under 20. He is intent on making golf a lifetime sport.
