| Latisha Ferguson, Special Olympics Bahamas |
The 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games marked the first time one of the Special Olympics Bahamas team members, Latisha Ferguson, had ever gone outside of her country. She definitely enjoyed her stay; Ferguson described Ireland as “beautiful” and the people as “very friendly” and she garnered three medals, two bronze and one silver, for her performance. Ferguson competed in the 25 meter Butterfly (finishing 3rd), 100 meter Freestyle (2nd), and, with teammates, in the 4 x 25 Freestyle Relay (3rd).
Ferguson was very proud to be representing her country. “It’s the chance of a lifetime and I’m so happy to be here,” she said. Even when her events weren't being contested, she was at the Aquatics Centre to support the swimmers from her team that were competing.
Ferguson is from Freeport and is the second of seven children. Her athletic abilities are not limited to the water, however, as she also enjoys running. When not training and competing, Ferguson enjoys watching TV, reading and simply sitting back.
