Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older. For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Ancil Greene,  Special Olympics Trinidad and Tobago

Ancil Greene loves to compete in Special Olympics events as well as mainstream athletic events. He was one of nine Special Olympics athletes who participated in the RCP Tiburon Mile open water swim on 19 September 2004, finishing in 29:10 — all of the Special Olympics athletes finished before half of the participants who had no disabilities.

In addition to competing and winning a gold medal in aquatics at the 1999 Special Olympics World Summer Games in North Carolina (USA), Greene is a top triathlete in his country, placing first in the National Sprint Triathlon and second, twice, in the full National Triathlon. Greene has also run ten marathons, placing in the top 20 finishers in three of those races. At the City of San Fernando Triathlon in 2002, Greene finished first. The triathlon consisted of a 750 meter swim, 20k cycle and 5k run.

When Greene is not training, he works with the St. Michaels Gym and Aqua Aerobic Centre and one day hopes to become a fully certified swim coach.
