Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older. For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Ales Leskovar, Special Olympics Slovenia

"I like sports and I see it as an opportunity to prove myself. I want to be very good,” says Ales Leskovar, dribbling downcourt. He usually trains once a week, but prior to a game, he trains more often.
Ales Leskovar lives in Ptuj, Slovenia and has been a Special Olympics athlete since 1992. His primary sport is basketball but he also participates in athletics, alpine skiing and aquatics.

“When I am involved in sports, I am with my friends and we have a good time. I like sports and I see it as an opportunity to prove myself. I want to be very good,” he says. “I have a very good time when I am with my basketball team, particularly when we travel together.”

His favorite basketball team is Union Olimpija from Ljubljana and favorite player is Ariel McDonald. He also admires Slovenian Alpine skier Spela Pretnar.

“Ales is a very good athlete who doesn’t miss any occasion to train,” says coach Tanja Vaupotic. “On the basketball team, he has learned a lot about teamwork and relationships with his friends. He is very enthusiastic about sports.”

Leskovar’s favorite memory of Special Olympics is winning a gold medal in the 25-meter crawl at the 1998 European swimming competition in Hungary.

When he is not training, Leskovar enjoys riding horses and working with animals in the zoo at the institute where he lives.
