Ahmed Salem Mohamed, Special Olympics Yemen, and his mother, Lobna Bashar
Ahmed Salem Mohamed, 24, made history at the 3rd Special Olympics Middle East /North Africa Regional Games by becoming the first athlete from Yemen to compete in the regional Games. Mohamed won gold medals in the shot put and high jump competitions. He was so happy that he kept hugging his mother, Lobna Bashar, as he could not believe it. "At last I was able to come in first and wear the gold medal. I am very happy. I will go back to Yemen and show the medal to my friends and colleagues," he said. "Ahmed's character has changed greatly since he started practicing sports four years ago," said Bashar. "He became sociable. He developed his own character. I owe the Special Olympics movement a lot for the great change in my son's life."
