Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older. For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

These are the Official Special Olympics Winter Sports Rules. These Sports Rules provide the standards for Special Olympics competitions that will be held locally, nationally, and worldwide.

The Official Special Olympics Winter Sports Rules is the result of recommendations and the practical experiences of thousands of coaches, volunteers, Special Olympics athletes and their families worldwide. Attention has been given to modifications in the sports rules to insure for the widest range of abilities and that each athlete has a reasonable chance to win.

These Rules provide the necessary steps for Games organizers to follow to insure that each athlete is placed in the appropriate ability group. They also provide the guidelines for coaches to follow in preparing their athletes for competition.

The Special Olympics Sports Rules Advisory Committee is proud to share the Official Special Olympics Winter Sports Rules with you and wishes to commend your commitment to providing our Special Olympics athletes with the best opportunity to train and compete.
