Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older. For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Special Olympics Spain athlete Juan Jose Querol Grass used to be very nervous when he visited a doctor. But that all changed when his eyes were tested at an Special Olympics-Lions Clubs International Opening Eyes® screening that was organized during the Sixth Special Olympics Spain National Games held recently.

“It was very funny to be with the doctors and not have any fear when they checked my eyes,” the 38-year-old football player said. He also was very happy with the new sunglasses he received.

Querol Grass was one of 1,400 athletes who competed in nine sports at the National Games that were held 9-12 October in Castellòn.

One hundred and fifty volunteers from medical associations, universities and health care professions throughout Spain conducted 2,300 screenings in seven Healthy Athletes disciplines (Special Smiles, Fit Feet, Fun Fitness, Opening Eyes, Healthy Hearing, Health Promotion and Medfest) over four days.

With the support and donations from 12 Spanish health care companies and associations, the Healthy Athletes team was able to provide quality screening services to athletes for free.

Healthy Hearing volunteer and speech therapist Rosa Mora, said, “I love to be with the athletes and provide hearing services to this community. I learn a lot about people with intellectual disability which helps me in my profession and makes me aware of the special needs of this community.”
