Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older. For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

“Be a fan. Share your spirit” Contest Launched

8 October 2008
Be a Fan and 2009 World Games logos

The 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games has launched a contest to promote the athlete values of strength, determination, empowerment, inspiration and community.

Visitors to the 2009 World Games Web site can share their spirit through an essay with a photo or video about a particular value and what it means to them. There will be a gallery section of entries for each value, and an opportunity for entrants to “share” their entries with friends and family. Visitors to the site can also comment on and rate the entries in each of the galleries.

Selected content from the entries into the contest will be exhibited during the World Winter Games in both Sun Valley and Boise, Idaho. Prizes will be awarded based on bi-weekly random drawings, plus 14 finalists and one grand prize winner will be selected from a panel of judges. Visit www.contest.2009worldgames.org for more contest and prizing details.

From 7-13 February 2009, Boise, Idaho (USA), will host the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games, which is expected to attract up to 3,000 athletes from more than 85 nations to compete in seven Olympic-type sports: Alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, figure skating, floor hockey, snowboarding, snowshoe racing and speed skating.
