Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older. For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Team Mattel

A major component of Special Olympics' three-year partnership with Mattel Inc. & Mattel Children's Foundation, Team Mattel was created in 2005 to engage employees in the Special Olympics movement around the world.

Visit the Families section of this Web site to learn more about the Special Olympics Young Athletes™ program, implemented as a pilot thanks to the generous support of the Mattel Children's Foundation.

In the first year of this partnership, Team Mattel attracted over 1,200 volunteers, our largest corporate volunteer team ever. They were involved in 12 events at the local, area or national Program level in the following Special Olympics regions:

  • East Asia: China, Hong Kong
  • Europe/Eurasia: Netherlands, U.K.
  • North America: Southern California, Mexico, New York, Texas and Wisconsin

Special Olympics has also received support from Mattel Retail Service employees in five U.S. cities.

The involvement of the members of Team Mattel goes beyond volunteering at events. They are committing more time, expertise and resources to boost the growth of a number of Special Olympics Programs.

“It's not about winning or losing; it's about athletes showing their abilities and having fun doing it”
