Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older. For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

You can be part of this exciting expansion by starting a local Special Olympics Program. Here's how:

  • Use our Program Locator to contact your state/provincial or national Special Olympics Program to determine if there already is a local Program in your area.
  • If there is no local Program in your area, tell the state/provincial or national Special Olympics office that you want to contribute to the growth of the movement by starting a local Program.

The state/provincial or national Special Olympics office will guide you through the process and provide you with all the resources and information you need to get started.

In addition, Special Olympics has put together the Ready, Set, Go! Special Olympics Local Program Development Kit and Guide to help you and potential Special Olympics athletes become fully involved in the movement.
